In 2003 a Brighton school teacher was murdered by a man that it was later confirmed was a regular viewer of violent pornographic material. It appears that he had attempted to reenact some of the scenes that he had witness on a strangulation fetish web-site. I was unaware that the production and publishing of such pornography was illegal in this country already but now, thanks to a campaign but the victims mother, it is also now illegal to posses such material. This offence carries a three year prison sentence.
What this shows is that there is indeed an awareness that such material does have an affect on those who view it. When the petition was given to parliament it gained unanimous cross party support; no mean feat. So maybe there is hope yet that the eyes of society can be opened to the destructive power of pornography in general.
Although, there is a niggling thought in my mind that this is simply a token gesture from the powers that be who don’t quite know what average Joe public really thinks about the issue. The law itself is going to be very difficult to enforce especially as there is a clause which allows for the accidental download of such material. This is obviously possible but I’d imagine quite unlikely and would make any prosecution difficult.

You sir, are an idiot. I realize that’s not what you want as a comment. You’d of course like praise and agreement with you puritanical sentiment, or at the very least a respectful disagreement that could lead to some sort of long, drawn out debate on whether good, decent humans should be “allowed to experience erotica. But that would require to have respect for you, and I do not. *Comment slightly edited to remove offensive content 03.09.06*
John, it would be intresting to actually hear constuctive arguments to as and why you think this sort of thing is ok, rather than just backlashing and being rather offensive, obviously for such a strong hated message you have strong feelings towards the subject, so why not share them and not some bigoted offensive rant???
Sorry John, but i don’t see how you can expect any credibility to be lent to your comments when you make such a wide-ranging and ambiguous attack.
For the sake of integrity, it would be good if you at least explained what on earth you’re talking about. Then perhaps we can look at this issue with a bit of perspective.
Rob, I am glad that you raised this topic up for discussion, as I don’ t think there is enough conversation on the subject. Especially in the church of today. John is obviously entitled to his opinion, as I am mine but I would love to hear his views in greater depth..maybe he’ll oblige!? Pornography is something that I’ve never really thought much about until recently. I have been trying to read some books and look at Christain web pages to find out more. Its a subject that most people don’t want to touch with a bargepole..because for many its a taboo. I would recommend the http://www.xxxchurch.com web site to those who wish to investigate it further. I think its really helpful for women to find out more as porn is incredibly luring for the majority of the male population. Saying that it does also affect women too. If we know more about it we can understand it better and support our family and friends who may need a non-judgemental ear? What do you think?
