Lunch – Week 2

Well I hope you have enjoyed some daily reading, I know I have.

At the end of each week Ill try and complete a short post to sum up the last weeks reading. Its not going to be a bible study as such, more of a recap and then back to you guys. Id love to hear any questions or things that particularly stood out for you.

So Matthew 1-10

Weve read about the birth of Christ, John the Baptist a hand full of amazing miracles, the sending out of the 12 disciples and of course the beatitudes so a lot to take in one week.

One of the things that really stood out to me early in the week was the number of references to the Old Testament there were, most of which demonstrate the fulfilment of prophecy. Even though Jesus was not the Messiah they expected it is amazing to see how many profits had it spot on

I also really like Matt 4:19 where Jesus calls Peter and Andrew, ââ?¬Å?come follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.ââ?¬Â I think it really shows that being a disciple of Jesus is really just about sharing His love with those around us; itââ?¬â?¢s about others coming to know Him. Challenging.

Look forward to hearing any questions or great bits for you. We can all discuss as we continue to read on

Please can someone explain the bit about Elijah coming again and John the Baptist, I don’t understand!! Are they saying John was like Elijah? or that he is Elijah… Or am I just being thick?
Matthew 17 Day 4 week 2

I also was confused about this – but I have done a little reading around this and I think the crux of it goes back to Matthew 11:13-14: “For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.”

So John the Baptist is not Elijah, he is simply the one preparing the way for the Messiah and in doing so is doing what Elijah did when he was on the earth. Luke 1:15 talks about John the Baptist going before the Lord in the ‘spirit and power of Elijah’. I think we can be pretty sure therefore that the bible is not saying that John the Baptist was Elijah.

I found this excellent article where a lot of this information was reasoned from: http://www.letusreason.org/NAM2.htm

Nice finding out Gaz and great question Julia.
