X Factor

Category : Society, Youth Bible Study

I love it when I know that a new series of the X-Factor is about to begin. Im not interested in seeing who wins and whos a great singer or performer. Im just interested in watching the morons who cant sing to save their life, but some how think theyre the best. What great entertainment! It makes me feel better about being a terrible singer, because I know Im a terrible singer, unlike those stupid people who humiliate themselves on public television *smile*

Sounds harsh, doesnt it? But at the end of the day, thats what its all about. Entertainment!!!

The question I want to ask is why do I find other peoples misfortune and lack of talent funny?

The truth is as Ive already said, it makes me feel good. Why does it make me feel good? Because I get to feel big. I feel better than those people. Because Im not good enough to be a potential winner, it makes me feel good to be reminded that there are others in the world that I can think of as below me. How sad!!! But its the truth.

Now Im not talking simply about the X-Factor. Im not saying its wrong to watch the X-Factor. What is wrong is that feeling of joy that we all have experienced at some time when other people fail. This is where the system of popularity comes from. Cool or geek. Why do we do this?

We do this because we all desire to know that we are important, better than others, wanted, liked, loved The reason we need this is because we are human. However, our identity needs to be found in Jesus, who loves each of us as we are, because God made each of us as we are. Those who fail the X-Factor first audition, those who go on to win and those of us who sit at home and watch.

Christ died for all of us. When God looks at each of us he sees his beautiful children. When we feel that we are better than other people its a lie from Satan. Satan wants us to feel this way because it disgusts God and separates us from him.

When we look down on other people we are looking down on Gods children. When we look down on other people we are also saying ââ?¬Å?God youââ?¬â?¢re not enough for me. I need to know that Iââ?¬â?¢m important to other people and Iââ?¬â?¢m willing to separate myself from you to win the approval of human beings.ââ?¬Â Itââ?¬â?¢s very sad and Satan loves this crazy process that so many of us fall into.

So next time we feel tempted to laugh at another persons misfortune lets stop and thank God for creating that person in his image.

Decisions, decisions, decisions…

Category : Bible, Bible Study, Youth Bible Study

In this months youth bible study we are going to have a think about the future and for all of those decisions which many of us are facing. For some, the end of the school year means decisions about the next: whether to stay on at college, go to university, take a gap year etc. For many of us the summer is a time to go away on holiday and have a rest – and often with that comes those familiar thoughts of ‘am I doing the right thing’ or ‘where is my life going’?

The funny thing about feeling like this is that it never stops. I am the wrong side of 25 and I can tell you that I still have thoughts about where life is headed and what decisions I need to take to get there. It’s a perfectly natural thing to do this – as human beings we know that we only get one shot at life and we want to make the best of it! So don’t worry if you are finding yourself in the midst of some ‘life’ decisions right now. It’s totally ok and there are stacks of people probably doing the same thing as you.

If you are a follower of Jesus then I am sure you have given consideration to what God is leading you to do. “Should I do this University course?”, “Should I do this gap year?”, “Should I get off my lazy butt and get a job?” – and in all of this “God what do you think I should do?”

First of all, the brilliant thing is that Jesus totally wants us to have the best life – check out John 10:10. “Life to the full” is what Jesus came to give us and when we give our lives to Him completely, that is what we are promised. Note that this may be different from the full life that the world may think you should have. The world says that life to the full will probably involve being filthy rich, being very good looking and going to lots of parties or something similar. Gods ways are not at all like ours – but His promise still stands. Life to the full, really is life in all its fullness and not some worldly cop-out that looks full, but probably isn’t.

The second thing is that I personally find it really difficult to hear God clearly about big life decisions. There have been times in my life where I have really wanted a big, booming voice to say “Go there”, but it never came. This may be different for you of course, and great if it is. For me I find that when I am facing big decisions God speaks to me through other people a lot – as often they are not being affected by their human emotions so much in the decision making process – which I find can get in the way of me hearing Gods voice. So if you are facing a big choice, make sure you chat it over with Godly people that you trust and take their advice seriously. The amazing thing is that when I look back over times when I really wanted Gods direction and thought I never heard it, I see Gods fingerprints all over it – and I wonder how I didn’t spot it at the time.

The final thing is a really simple one: Don’t worry. Jesus spoke about this in Matthew 6 and His words are completely stunning. He basically tells us not to worry about our future because worrying achieves nothing. As such…

…do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

This is amazingisn’t it? Jesus is saying here that if you seek the Kingdom of God – i.e. we seek to see Gods will done in our lives and live in Jesus example, then our Father in heaven will take care of everything! What an awesome thing to know – that God has a plan for each of our lives.

This doesn’t mean that we just need to sit around and wait for it to all unfold around us. When humans were created in the Garden of Eden God gave us free will – meaning that even though God has a plan for us, it is up to us to choose to live it. I believe that if we set our minds on pleasing God and living the way He wants us to then He will direct us in the way to go.

I’ll finish with an awesome proverb:

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Let’s be people who acknowledge God in all things and be amazed at where He takes our lives.

BIG BROTHER

“His eyes are on the ways of men; he sees their every step. There is no dark place, no deep shadow where evildoers can hide.” (Job 34:21-22)

Maybe you’ve seen the show Big Brother. If you haven’t where have you been living the past 5 years?, but for those who havenââ?¬â?¢t the idea of the show is simple… Watch a bunch of people live in a house, see how they act in situations and get along with other people. There are cameras everywhere. On the Internet you can watch them 24 hours a day… While they sleep, while they’re in each of the rooms, you hear them talking, watch them playing games or whatever they do.

The shows title, Big Brother, comes from a number of years ago… People thought (some still do!) that the government was getting too involved in our lives. People were paranoid that we were being monitored too closely… They thought phone calls were being listened to; medical records looked at, bank accounts checked… So, someone started the phrase “Big brother is watching”…

“You better watch what you’re doing… ‘Big Brother’ is watching…” I guess there are a couple arguments to be made here… I do really not want to discuss politics with you… But, in this case it makes sense… Some people say, “We should be watched … If we’re not doing anything wrong, it doesn’t matter who’s watching…” Others say, “It’s not their right to know what we’re doing… This is a free country … If we break laws; they should find us without watching every step we take… What a waste of money to watch everyone waiting for someone to break a law…”

The REAL ‘Big Brother’ Is Watching

I’m reminded of a scene from one of my favorite movies, Bruce Almighty. God has this file cabinet with every Bruce ever did, thought about and said. And think for a second about all the jokes you’ve heard about God or someone ‘waiting at the pearly gates’ with a book to determine whether someone was allowed in heaven. Bruce Almighty is a movie, and the jokes are… Jokes. But in Job 34, we’re told there’s nowhere to run, nowhere to hide… God sees everything we do.

I don’t know about you, but knowing that God is watching my every move and knows all my thoughts makes me a little nervous. In every day there are things that I don’t want God or anyone else to know about, and knowing that God sees everything makes me try to live a little better life. That knowledge certainly makes my decision making process different. In the movie, Bruce wanted to see the file God had on him… I’m not sure I’d want to see that. It might be scary, it might make me feel bad, it might make me realise just how many mistakes I’ve made…

God is all-knowing… What’s really amazing to me is… Even though He knows everything I say, do and think, all the good AND all the bad, He still loves me. I don’t think of God knowing everything as a scary thing, but instead a source of comfort and extreme love for me. I hope you do too.
