I have found it interesting this week reading into the Gospel of Luke to see the differences in the gospels. You often dont get to compare them unless you are reading straight through.
Obviously they each have there own style and emphasis and this week I have really enjoyed the detailed approach from Luke. He gives you a lot of information about John the Baptist and his birth the others dont go into. In Chapter 3 John gives some inspiring teaching that I have never really paid much attention to before.
The people that come to be baptised ask John how they should live there lives, he gives them examples of how they can live a Jesus life style in there work place and day to day life. Sharing what they have, respecting people and not abusing the authority or position they might have over people. This really struck me as some great direct teaching that is so easy to apply to our day to day lives. It challenged me, how close does my life at work match that of Jesus.
When Jesus follows John he starts to perform amazing miracles and teaches with authority. He affirms this Jesus life style at the end of chapter 6, love your enemies.
Such radical teaching then and now.
He says anyone can love their friend, sinners can do that no problem, but to actually love those who are your enemy, now there is a challenge. This is well known teaching from Jesus but do we actually live by it? Do we join in at work when we slate our bosses or peers? How about when we are trying to get promoted over our colleagues?
As always the Gospels continue to challenge me, reading them daily is really sharpening me in ways that I can normally forget about. Im sure Luke is going to continue to do that.
Monday Luke 7-8
Tuesday Luke 9-10
Wednesday Luke 11-12
Thursday Luke 13-14
Friday Luke 15-16
Happy reading.
